Christmas In The Village Nears

Soon again it will be the time of year when the Village of South Meriden will turn on the lights, put up the Holiday wreaths, prepare the hot chocolate, bake the cinnamon apples and trim the tree. The twinkle in the eyes of our local children is assured. From the festivals opening parade with its two horse drawn carriages, to the carol sings, not to mention the sight of Santa, Rudolph, Frosty, and Santa's Elves, our 2009 event promises to be the best gathering yet. The sight, sounds, smells, and spirit of the holiday will fill the Main Street of the village. The day's festivities will close with our traditional bonfire and the tree lighting ceremony.

We suggest you bring a non perishable item such as a can of food to donate which will go to a local charity. This year's charity is The Meriden Soup Kitchen. We will then enter your name into a raffle for prizes given throughout the day.

We also celebrate this event each year by choosing a charitable organization to sell luminary bags prior and during the event. These are small white bags that have candles in them and sell for $5.00. The bags are then placed along the curb on Main Street and then are lit at dark. This year's charitable organization is the Quinnipiac River Watershed Association.

Each year we also sponsor the South Meriden House Decorating contest. It is judged on Friday night December 4th, 2009 prior to our celebration. Each three to four homeowners are award gifts for their efforts on making the holiday a little more seasonal and colorful.

Christmas in the Village is a non profit organization made up of volunteers from local business, neighborhood leaders, churches and schools. Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors and funds that are collected from other events each year we are able to bring our community together free of charge in a non-denominational celebration of the holiday season.

This year we will be selling our annual collectable Christmas ornaments sponsored by Naugatuck Savings Bank. Click on the picture of the ornament to the left to enlarge it. This ornament sells for $7.00 which can be purchased the day of the event at many locations (see map). We have a limited quantity so get one before they sell out. All proceeds will go to Christmas in the Village.
